WTA WTA roundup: No. 3 seed Irina-Camelia Begu falls in Lausanne

Russia’s Anastasia Potapova rolled to a 6-4, 6-2 upset of No. 3 seed Irina-Camelia Begu of Romania in second-round action Wednesday at the Ladies Open Lausanne in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Constantly thwarting danger in the one-hour, 39-minute match, Potapova advanced to the quarterfinals by saving 13 of 14 break points.

No. 4 seed Sara Sorribes Tormo of Spain advanced to the quarterfinals of the WTA 250 clay-court event with a 6-4, 6-2 defeat of France’s Clara Burel. Croatia’s Petra Martic won by the same score against Russia’s Erika Andreeva and Switzerland’s Simona Waltert outlasted Spain’s Cristina Bucsa 6-1, 5-7, 6-4. France’s Leolia Jeanjean advanced in a walkover against Germany’s Tatjana Maria.

Hungarian Grand Prix

China’s Xiyu Wang upset top-seeded Barbora Krejcikova of the Czech Republic 6-1, 7-6 (1) in a first-round match in Budapest.

Krejcikova recorded eight double faults and converted only one of her six break opportunities against Wang, who will face Romania’s Ana Bogdan in the second round of the WTA 250 clay-court tournament.

No. 2 seed Martina Trevisan of Italy won her second-round match, 6-4, 7-5 against Ukraine’s Kateryna Baindl. Bernarda Pera upset No. 5 Aliaksandra Sasnovich of Belarus 7-5, 6-2. No. 6 Shuai Zhang of China won 7-5, 6-1 against Georgia’s Ekaterine Gorgodze. No. 9 Anna Bondar of Hungary defeated Greece’s Despina Papamichail 6-2, 6-3. No. 4 Anhelina Kalinina retired after losing the first set 6-3 to the Czech Republic’s Katerina Siniakova.
