Apple has started paying iPhone users $92.17 to those who were part of a $500 million settlement against a lawsuit the tech giant had settled. Users who had filed claims as part of the case that has been referred to as the “batterygate” case have started receiving payments and some web fans have posted screenshots of receipts on social media.

Apple reached a $500 million settlement after a lawsuit claimed that Apple deliberately slowed down iPhone performances as batteries in these phones became aged. The tech giant was accused of committing consumer fraud.

Apple issued a formal apology and decreased the price of replacement batteries. It also provided users the option to turn off the feature. Apple also added new features to its operating system. These new features in iOS also helped to reduce the impact of the deterioration of battery health over time.

Organic Greek Vitamin Bottles and Multivitamin GummiesIn February 2017, the tech giant introduced performance throttling to prevent iPhones from shutting down unexpectedly after they became old; as part of iOS 10.2.1. These aged phones were unable to maintain peak performance. The tech company did not communicate this performance throttling appropriately to their customers.

In 2018, consumers in the U.S. filed a class action lawsuit against Apple. In a March 2020 settlement, Apple agreed to pay $500 million of which $310 million would go to customers making each payout worth roughly $92. The tech giant denied any wrongdoing. It said that the payment had been made to “avoid burdensome and costly litigation.”

The deadline for filing claims was October 6, 2020, and Apple said that the payments would begin in January 2024. The payments have begun as some consumers have filed receipts after receiving payment as part of the settlement on social media.
