Chick-Fil-A backtracks on NAE pledge, to use some antibiotics in chicken

Chick-Fil-A backtracked on its No Antibiotics Ever (NAE) policy that was made in 2014. The popular chicken sandwich chain announced it will use some antibiotics and follow another standard. It became another giant American company that flew away from its earlier pledge. In 2023, massive meat and poultry producer Tyson Foods also said that it would no longer follow the no antibiotics ever policy. Panera also changed its policy to allow antibiotic use in pork and turkey products.

Chick-fil-A said it would follow a new standard—no antibiotics necessary for human medicine. This standard, often called NAIHM, will be implemented starting in Spring 2024. The company will avoid the use of antibiotics commonly used to treat human beings and limit antibiotic use in cases involving animal illnesses.

The rampant use of antibiotics to plump chickens and other livestock has led to human drug resistance. Many companies that use meat and poultry products had pledged to restrict the use of drugs as human resistance to several drugs was on the rise, and meat and poultry were primary conduits for this rise in resistance.

Chick-fil-A said that supply chain constraints have made it change its no-antibiotic-ever pledge, as its competitors have also used similar arguments to revoke the pledge to avoid the total use of antibiotics in their meat and poultry products.

The popular sandwich chain also said that it would serve only white breast meat without added hormones and would not add artificial preservatives or fillers.

Pilgrim’s Pride said that its products contain some antibiotics. Purdue remains one of the few major companies that will continue with the NAE pledge.
