Former college great and Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow is part of an ownership group bringing minor league hockey to Lake Tahoe.

The ECHL on Monday approved the Lake Tahoe team, which will become the 29th member of the league. The team, not yet given a nickname, will begin play in the 2024-25 season in the Tahoe Blue Event Center, a 4,200-seat arena in Stateline, Nev.

Tebow is part owner with David Hodges, CEO of Hodges Management Group LLC, owner of car dealerships and real estate firms in Georgia.

Tebow has been a minority partner with two other ECHL teams, the Jacksonville Icemen and the Savannah Ghost Pirates.

“I love that sports can bring people together from all over to enjoy camaraderie, competition and community impact,” Tebow said in an ECHL release. “I’m so grateful for the opportunity to be part of a group bringing hockey to the Tahoe area for fans and families to create memories for years to come.”

The group expects to announce an NHL affiliation in February 2024. Hodges and Tebow said they’ll work with fans on a team nickname, colors and logo.

Tebow, who won the Heisman in 2007 with Florida, was selected to the College Football Hall of Fame in January. He — along with 17 others — will be inducted on Dec. 5.
