Elon Musk Denies Ex-NASA Astronaut Kelly’s Request for Starlink Ramp-Up over Ukraine, Says Support Could Spark ‘WW3’

To help the armed forces, Elon Musk has rejected requests from former NASA astronaut Scott Kelly to expand his Starlink internet system over Ukraine.
On Saturday, Kelly tweeted Musk, writing: “Ukraine desperately needs your continued support.” He also said that defending a genocidal invasion was not something offensive but was about surviving. Kelly also stated that unintentional deaths are likely, and Musk could offer support.

The request came in after Musk’s business reportedly restricted the Ukrainian military’s use of Starlink, as reported by multiple outlets after SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell’s announcement. SpaceX took prevention steps were taken because Starlink was being used to command drones carrying grenades.

Kelly was told by Musk that he was intelligent enough “not to swallow media & other propaganda bs.” He referred to Starlink as Ukraine’s “communication backbone,” something he has previously said. Musk tweeted that they won’t allow conflict escalation to trigger “World War3.”

Since they activated the service in the nation and sent over thousands of internet kits following Russia’s invasion in February 2022, Ukrainian citizens and troops have used Starlink to get online.

The service is “not designed or intended for use with or in offensive or defensive weaponry or other comparable end-uses,” according to the terms of service for Starlink. The Ukrainian military, however, has reportedly used Starlink on drones. Musk claimed in a different tweet that while Starlink terminals are not intended for military use, “we have not exercised our right to turn them off.”

Starlink is only intended for “peaceful use,” according to a previous tweet by Musk, and the company won’t permit it to be used for long-range drone strikes, according to a more recent tweet. The company never intended for Starlink to be used as a “weapon” in the conflict, according to SpaceX COO Gwynne Shotwell, but “the Ukrainians have leveraged it in ways that were unintentional and not part of any agreement.”

Since Russia invaded on February 24 and bombed communications and power infrastructure, Ukraine has relied on a network of 2,200 low-orbiting satellites as a lifeline. However, it has also been essential for Ukraine to use battlefield drones, as well as for fighters to identify the adversary and concentrate long-range artillery strikes on them.

In March 2022, The Times of London reported that a Ukrainian drone unit was utilizing Starlink to aid in the nighttime destruction of Russian tanks and trucks.
The satellite service, one soldier claimed to a British reporter in April, “changed the war in Ukraine’s favor.”
