Billionaire Elon Musk, who paid $44 billion for Twitter in October, calls himself a “free speech absolutist” and justified the acquisition by emphasizing the need to safeguard expression. However, a lot of his actions in that regard, such as weakening its content moderation policies and restoring access to accounts that had been suspended for breaking the rules have angered some journalists.

Since November, the company has been effectively silent. This was the time that Elon Musk, CEO of Twitter, supposedly decimated it through layoffs after purchasing the business. The layoffs and mass resignations themselves, significant changes to the user experience, and a string of reported controversies involving Musk and his announcement that he will eventually step down, among other developments, have all occurred since, and the company has not responded to any questions from journalists about any of these developments.
The press email account is now, at least partially, functional once more. In the future, it will instantly respond to journalists’ questions with a single poop emoji, Musk declared on Sunday – of course via tweet. NPR reported that it emailed Twitter on Monday morning seeking feedback, and Twitter replied right away with the scat symbol.
Many Twitter users immediately criticized him and the new policy after confirming that they had effectively tested the feature for themselves.
After an abrupt change in policy regarding accounts that share the locations of private jets (including his own) using publicly available information, he took the extremely unusual action of banning the accounts of several high-profile journalists who cover the site in December. After receiving extensive criticism, including from the European Union and UN, as well as the results of an unofficial Twitter poll, Musk restored those accounts several days later.
This is not the first time Musk has used the poop emoji in a serious situation or de-emphasized external communications at a business he controls. The electric car company Tesla, of which Musk is co-founder and CEO, allegedly disbanded its PR department in 2020 and ceased responding to press inquiries. In 2021, Musk replied to tweets from reporters pleading with him to think again.

Since then, Tesla has encountered its fair share of scandals. Notably, Musk was accused of securities fraud by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission for a string of tweets he made in 2018 that hinted at a potential Tesla acquisition but never materialized. In February, a jury found him innocent of all charges. Musk is known to frequently troll his opponents on Twitter, reports say.
