Elon Musk’s X, formerly Twitter to charge one dollar per year in new subscription program in two countries

Elon Musk’s platform X, formerly called Twitter, has rolled out a new subscription plan in two countries. The platform will charge new users $1 per year. The plan has been formulated to prevent bots on the platform, but some web fans have already posted that there are already several verified bots that pay the $8 monthly subscription and are active on the site.

The platform has named the new subscription plan as “Not A Bot.” It will charge users one American dollar in their local currency every year. The fee would depend on the exchange rate in the country of operation. It will first be rolled out in New Zealand and the Philippines.

Late Tuesday, X posted the details about its new “Not A Bot” program, after a report by Fortune. New users, who pay the fee in local currency, can perform several functions including posting on the site, liking posts, using reply function and quoting content on X. Reading content on X will still be without any charge.

Elon Musk also tweeted about the new program and has said that the new rollout is not about making money but is a way to control bots on the site. Whether this happens remains to be seen as some web fans have said that bots have “verified” blue check marks and this verification is available at a much higher rate of $8 per month, unlike the new $1 per year rollout in select countries.

After Elon Musk bought Twitter as it was then called late last year, the platform underwent several changes and is also facing a few lawsuits. Elon Musk fired thousands of staff members and many major advertisers left the platform for several reasons including lack of monitoring of hate speech and content.

The Tesla billionaire says that X still has a huge number of daily users whereas an independent report from SimilarWeb, a web tracking firm says that X’s global web traffic has fallen by 14 percent.

The European Commission is investigating X, Meta and other social media sites for illegal content, hate speech, incitement to violence and more during these trying times and will impose a hefty fine if such content is not removed quickly.
