The Indiana Fever fired Marianne Stanley on Wednesday after two-plus seasons as the team’s head coach.

Stanley was in the final year of her contract with the Fever, who have lost five consecutive games to fall to 2-7 on the season.

Assistant Carlos Knox will serve as the team’s interim head coach for the remainder of the season.

“With this new group of players, it is time for our organization to go in a different direction,” Fever interim general manager Lin Dunn said. “This was a difficult decision, and we wish Marianne the very best in the future.”

A member of the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame, Stanley was named WNBA Coach of the Year as head coach of the Washington Mystics in 2002.

Stanley, 68, became the Fever’s seventh coach in franchise history in November 2019. She owned a 14-49 record with the club.

“I want to thank the Simon family and the Fever organization for the opportunity to lead this team over the past two and a half years,” Stanley said. “I look forward to the next chapter in my basketball journey, as well as being able to spend more time with my family.”

Stanley was an assistant coach with the Los Angeles Sparks, New York Liberty and Rutgers after leaving the Mystics following the 2003 season. Stanley returned to Washington as an assistant coach in 2010.
