FIFA News: USMNT final camp a possible boon to World Cup hopefuls

The United States Men’s National Team will host one last camp on native soil in an effort to give roster hopefuls a final chance at making the squad for next month’s World Cup at Qatar.

The camp has been labeled “fitness workouts” by U.S. Soccer and will take place at Frisco, Texas. It was set to begin Tuesday and run until Nov. 5, which is just 16 days before the USMNT takes the field for its World Cup opener against Wales.

The camp is open to MLS-based players whose teams are not among the MLS Cup Playoffs semifinalists. Los Angeles FC, Austin FC, New York City FC and the Philadelphia Union all remain in contention for an MLS Cup title.

Players attending the camp are Paul Arriola and Jesús Ferreira of FC Dallas, Aaron Long of the New York Red Bulls, Shaq Moore and Walker Zimmerman of Nashville SC, Jordan Morris and Cristian Roldan of the Seattle Sounders, Gaga Slonina of the Chicago Fire and DeAndre Yedlin of Inter Miami. More players could be added as they become available.

Players with USMNT experience who will not be attending include FC Dallas’ Sebastian Lletget and the Colorado Rapids’ Gyasi Zardes.

The camp does not appear to help the roster prospects of defender John Brooks, who is struggling for playing time with Benfica in Portugal, or forward Jordan Pefok, who has three goals and four assists for Union Berlin, who are in first place in Germany’s Bundesliga.

The final 26-man USMNT World Cup roster will be announced Nov. 6.
