Former Alabama player Darius Miles denied bond

Former Alabama basketball player Darius Miles will continue to be held in a Tuscaloosa County (Ala.) jail as he faces a capital murder charge.

On Wednesday, County Circuit Judge Daniel Pruet ordered Miles to remain jailed without bond. AL.com reported that Miles cried when he heard the ruling, adding the judge told Miles the issue will be “revisited at a later date” because there are some factors in Miles’ favor in the case.

Miles and another man, Michael Lynn Davis, have been held without bond since Jan. 15 and were indicted by a grand jury in April in the shooting death of Jamea Harris, a 23-year-old woman from Birmingham.

Police investigating the shooting near the university’s campus believe Davis fired the gun, but that the weapon belonged to Miles. Alabama removed Miles, a reserve, from the team following his arrest.

Defense attorney Mary Turner fought for the bond, telling the court Miles wasn’t the person who fired the shot that killed Harris, that he never has been in trouble and that he tried to de-escalate a dispute between Davis and Harris.

Miles’ family and at least three Alabama basketball players were there to support him, AL.com reported.

Miles is alleged to have had the gun delivered to the scene of the incident by former teammate Brandon Miller, who has not been charged in the case. Miller is expected to be a top-three pick in the NBA draft.
