Former Seattle Storm center Simone Edwards has died at 49 after a two-year battle with ovarian cancer.

Edwards played in 178 games in six seasons with Seattle from 2000-05, averaging 5.3 points and 3.5 rebounds and winning a WNBA championship in 2004. She was an original member of the expansion team in 2000.

“Our Jamaican Hurricane was a warrior on & off the court,” the Storm posted Thursday on Twitter to announce her passing. “With her indefatigable energy & optimism, she brought happiness to so many. Our thoughts & condolences are with Simone’s family and loved ones at this time.”

A native of Kingston, Jamaica, the 6-foot-4 Edwards played college basketball at Iowa from 1994-97 and helped the Hawkeyes win a Big Ten regular-season title in 1995-96 and a Big Ten tournament title the next year.
