Rhys Hoskins hit a home run and finished with four RBIs on Saturday afternoon as the visiting Milwaukee Brewers staved off a late comeback by the New York Mets to earn a 7-6 victory.

Hoskins’ third-inning two-run homer was his first in the regular season since Sept. 30, 2022, after not playing last season because of a torn left ACL in spring training as a member of the Philadelphia Phillies.

Hoskins capped a three-run first inning with a two-run single and singled and scored in the fifth.

Mets reliever Yohan Ramirez was ejected for throwing a pitch behind Hoskins in the seventh. Hoskins and New York second baseman Jeff McNeil exchanged words and both bullpens and benches spilled on to the field Friday following Hoskins’ hard slide in the eighth inning of Milwaukee’s 3-1 victory.

Willy Adames opened the scoring with an RBI double in the first for the Brewers, who are 2-0 for the first time since they opened 2018 with three straight wins. Christian Yelich added an RBI single in the eighth.

Hoskins and William Contreras each had three hits while Adames, Yelich, Bryce Turang and Jackson Chourio had two hits apiece.

Elvis Peguero (1-0) earned the win by tossing two perfect innings in relief of DL Hall, who gave up two runs on six hits and two walks while striking out one over four innings. Abner Uribe notched his second save despite giving up Pete Alonso’s solo homer in the ninth.

Francisco Alvarez homered in the second for the Mets, laced an RBI single in the third and finished with three hits as New York dropped to 0-2 for the first time since 2014. Brett Baty hit a three-run pinch-hit homer in the eighth for the Mets.

New York starter Luis Severino (0-1) took the loss, allowing six runs on 12 hits while striking out six over five innings. Severino is the first Mets pitcher to allow at least 12 hits over five innings or fewer since Zack Wheeler gave up 12 hits in five innings on Aug. 13, 2019.
