The Seattle Mariners placed right-hander Jackson Kowar on the 60-day injured list Sunday because of a right ulnar collateral ligament tear.

The team announced last week that Kowar, 27, was meeting with doctors on Friday after experiencing soreness in his throwing arm.

Also Sunday, the Mariners signed veteran right-hander Ryne Stanek to a one-year contract.

The Mariners obtained Kowar and minor league right-hander Cole Phillips from the Atlanta Braves in a Dec. 3 trade for outfielder Jarred Kelenic, left-hander Marco Gonzalez and first baseman Evan White.

The Braves acquired Kowar from the Kansas City Royals less than a month earlier, on Nov. 17, for right-hander Kyle Wright.

The Royals selected Kowar in the first round, 33rd overall, in the 2018 MLB Draft out of Florida. Kowar was 2-6 with a 9.12 ERA, 75 strikeouts and 51 walks in 74 innings over 39 games (eight starts) from 2021-23.

Stanek, 32, posted a 3-1 record with a 4.09 ERA last season for the Houston Astros. He registered 51 strikeouts and 21 walks in 50 2/3 innings over 55 games in relief.

The Mariners selected Stanek out of his Stilwell, Kan., high school in the 2010 MLB Draft, but he attended the University of Arkansas. The Tampa Bay Rays made him the 29th overall pick in the 2013 draft.

Stanek has pitched for the Rays (2017-19), Miami Marlins (2019-20) and Astros (2021-23) in his seven-year major league career. He has a 10-14 record with four saves, a 3.45 ERA, 406 strikeouts and 175 walks in 347 innings over 338 games (56 starts).

He has a 3-0 record with a 2.70 ERA in 20 innings over 23 postseason appearances.

“His combination of high-end stuff and durability adds to an already deep and talented relief corps,” Mariners general manger Justin Hollander said in a news release. “Ryne has a strong track record of pitching in leverage roles for championship-caliber teams.”
