MLB News: Marlins ace Sandy Alcantara has Tommy John surgery, out for ‘24

Miami Marlins starting pitcher Sandy Alcantara announced Friday that he underwent Tommy John surgery and will not play in 2024.

The 2022 National League Cy Young Award winner had a less productive season in 2023 and had not pitched since Sept. 3 due to a sprained ulnar collateral ligament in his right (pitching) elbow.

Alcantara posted a social media message in English and Spanish to break the news to fans, thanking them for their support throughout a season that saw Miami earn a NL wild-card playoff berth.

“I give this game my all, I give this city my all,” Alcantara wrote. “And so I promise I will not take a day off as I push to be back better than ever. I will miss pitching, but I plan to be around the team as much as possible. I’m confident that guys like Jesus (Luzardo), Eury (Perez), Edward (Cabrera), (Braxton) Garrett and Trevor (Rogers) will hold down the fort while I am there giving my support. Nothing can take away from my love for Miami and the Marlins fans.”

Alcantara went 7-12 with a 4.14 ERA in 28 starts in 2023. He tied for the major league lead in complete games with three, and he struck out 151 batters while walking 48.

In his Cy Young campaign, Alcantara went 14-9 with a 2.28 ERA over 32 starts, fanning 207 batters and pitching a major-league best six complete games.

He is 41-55 with a 3.32 ERA for his career, which includes eight games with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2017 before joining the Marlins in 2018.

The Marlins’ season ended this week when the Philadelphia Phillies swept them in two games in the NL wild-card round.
