MLB News: O’s use early rally to snap Jays’ winning streak

Adley Rutschman’s two-run double headlined a five-run third inning and steady work from the bullpen helped the Baltimore Orioles to a 9-6 victory against the visiting Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday night.

The outcome snapped a three-game losing streak for the Orioles (72-64), who need to make headway in the American League wild-card chase. Ryan Mountcastle drove in three runs.

Bo Bichette homered again, and Matt Chapman had two run-scoring hits, including a double in the fifth inning, for the Blue Jays (75-60). Bichette and Alejandro Kirk both went 4-for-5 for Toronto, which had a five-game winning streak halted.

Cedric Mullins gave the Orioles a 6-4 cushion with his sixth-inning single. Toronto tacked on a run in the seventh, but a double play hindered a quest for more scoring. Baltimore got three more runs with two outs in the eighth on Anthony Santander’s bases-loaded walk and Mountcastle’s two-run single for a 9-5 edge.

Baltimore relievers yielded three runs across the last six innings. Dillon Tate (4-3) was the winning pitcher despite giving up a run in 1 2/3 innings.

Bichette, who homered three times in Monday night’s game, smacked a two-run homer to give the Blue Jays a 3-0 lead in the third inning.

The Orioles wiped out the deficit in the bottom of the frame. Rutschman belted a two-run double, and Mountcastle and Gunnar Henderson both had RBI singles.

Blue Jays starter Mitch White (1-6) couldn’t get out of the third, so he was saddled with five runs in 2 1/3 innings.

The game’s first run came in the second inning on Chapman’s run-scoring single. That marked his first RBI in eight games.

That run ended 16 consecutive shutout innings covering three different starts for Baltimore’s Kyle Bradish. He was finished after three innings, giving up three runs on six hits for his shortest outing in his last dozen appearances.

Jorge Mateo and Rougned Odor each scored two runs for the Orioles, but only Mullins and Mountcastle had more than one hit.

The start of the game was delayed because of inclement weather.
