MLB News: Padres’ Yu Darvish won’t pitch again in 2023

San Diego Padres right-hander Yu Darvish won’t pitch again this season because of a stress reaction on his elbow.

Darvish went on the 15-day injured list on Aug. 28 due to inflammation in his right elbow. He last pitched Aug. 25.

The decision to end his season, announced Tuesday night, came after he felt irritation while playing catch.

An MRI done after he went on the IL turned up a bone spur, and offseason surgery remains a possibility. Darvish will try resting it before turning to surgery, per ESPN.

“Once he feels good and he’s able to start throwing again, we’ll evaluate that,” Padres manager Bob Melvin said about how the injury could impact his 2024 season. “But it’s not going to be in the next couple of weeks here during the season.”

The season started with promise for Darvish, who signed a six-year, $108 million contract extension in February after he was 16-8 with a 3.10 ERA in 2022. The 37-year-old is under contract through the 2028 season.

But this season was a different story, as Darvish finishes with an 8-10 record and 4.56 ERA in 136 1/3 innings over 24 starts. He struck out 141 batters.
