The Boston Red Sox recalled top prospect Ceddanne Rafaela from Triple-A Worcester on Monday among a handful of moves.

Rafaela, who has been utilized as an outfielder and shortstop, is the No. 3 prospect in the organization, per MLB Pipeline. He signed with the Red Sox for $10,000 as an international free agent in 2017.

After starting the season at Double-A Portland, Rafaela was promoted to Triple-A on June 28. He hit .312 with 14 homers and 42 RBIs in 48 games at Worcester.

Shortstop has been an area of concern all season for Boston, which has used nine players at the position in 2023.

Rafaela, 22, did not crack the starting lineup for Monday’s game against the visiting Houston Astros.

In another move, the Red Sox placed outfielder Wilyer Abreu on the paternity list. Abreu, 24, made his major league debut on Aug. 22 and has gone 6-for-17 (.353) with one home run and five RBIs in five games since joining the big-league club.

Shortstop Pablo Reyes landed on the 10-day injured list on Monday due to left elbow inflammation. The 29-year-old Reyes is hitting .303 with two homers and 18 RBIs in 51 games this season.

Right-hander Kyle Barraclough and shortstop David Hamilton will be joining Rafaela in coming up from Worcester to Boston, while the Red Sox also sent left-hander Chris Murphy down to Triple-A.
