Jefferson Savarino scored in the fifth minute of second-half stoppage time to give Real Salt Lake a 2-2 tie with the host San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday night.

Justin Meram set up the tying goal for Real Salt Lake. Savarino received the cross and his right-footed shot bounced off the hands of San Jose goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski and into the net for his team-best fifth goal of the season.

Jasper Loffelsend scored his first career MLS goal for Real Salt Lake (9-7-7, 34 points), who have just one win over their past seven matches (1-3-3).

Jeremy Ebobisse scored his career-best 12th goal of the season and Cristian Espinoza contributed a goal and an assist for the Earthquakes (5-9-8, 23 points).

San Jose is 0-2-1 over its past three matches.

The Earthquakes held a 14-12 edge in shots but Salt Lake put six on target to San Jose’s four.

Marcinkowski had three saves for the Earthquakes, and Zac MacMath made two for Real Salt Lake.

Salt Lake’s tying goal came shortly after San Jose had a manpower edge on the Salt Lake side of the field but opted to run time off the clock instead of taking a shot.

Ebobisse’s goal in the 62nd minute came after a Salt Lake miscue.

MacMath’s short goal kick was intercepted by Espinoza, who fed the ball up to Ebobisse. MacMath came out and slid but Ebobisse booted a left-footed shot past him to put San Jose ahead 2-1.

Salt Lake had a chance to knot the score in the 87th minute but Rubio Rubin’s close-range right-footer was saved by Marcinkowski.

San Jose struck first after Salt Lake’s Justen Glad was called for a hand ball in the box.

Espinosa put the ball on the spot in the 12th minute and easily sent a right-footed shot into the left corner of the net. It was Espinoza’s sixth goal of the season.

Salt Lake knotted the score nine minutes later when it made a run from its own end through the Earthquakes’ defense. Loffelsend broke in and Marcinkowski came out to cut off the angle but Loffelsend easily knocked the ball into the right corner of the net.
