Hernan Losada returns to MLS as the new head coach of CF Montreal.

The former D.C. United coach was appointed Wednesday to replace Wilfried Nancy, who departed earlier this month to become the head coach of the Columbus Crew.

“We were looking for a coach who could continue the sporting project we have been building since my arrival in 2020 and we are convinced that Hernan checks all the boxes at this level,” said CF Montreal chief sporting officer Olivier Renard in a news release. “With the philosophy put forward at the Club over the past few years, both on and off the field, we are very pleased with our choice.”

Losada, 40, was 16-19-5 with D.C. United from 2021-22. He was let go after a 2-4-0 start to the 2022 season.

The Argentina native previously coached Beerschot AC of Belgium’s first division for two seasons, tallying a 20-14-8 mark.

“It is with great excitement, motivation and gratitude that I approach this new opportunity,” Losada said. “I am eager to put all my energy, enthusiasm, and abilities into this great project.

“It is even more special to be able to join a group composed of people with extensive experience … who have built, with the participation of the entire Club, an identity and a work philosophy focused on youth development, offering them opportunities for growth both on and off the field. My mission is to continue in this same direction, offering an offensive and positive style of play while creating an energizing work environment to continue growing together and reach our goals.”

An attacking midfielder, Losada recorded 101 goals and 55 assists in 370 career games from 2003-18 with clubs in Argentina, Chile, Belgium and the Netherlands.

Montreal ended the 2022 regular season with a 20-9-5 record and earned the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference. Montreal lost to New York City FC in the conference semifinals.
