Two Indiana State freshmen football players were among three students killed in a weekend automobile accident.

Two other Sycamores players remain hospitalized in serious condition, according to the university.

Defensive back Caleb VanHooser, 19, and linebacker Christian Eubanks, 18, died in the single-vehicle crash at about 1:30 a.m. Sunday. Indiana State student Jayden Musili, 19, was also killed.

According to the Vigo County Sheriff’s Office, the vehicle veered off a state highway and crashed into a tree before catching on fire. The accident happened in the town of Riley, about 10 miles from campus in Terre Haute.

“It is a terrible day for Indiana State football and a devastating loss for both the Eubanks and the VanHooser families,” head coach Curt Mallory said in a statement. “Both young men were quality individuals who were loved and respected by their teammates and this staff. To say they will be missed is an understatement.”

The Sycamores are scheduled to open the season at home Sept. 1 against North Alabama.

The injured players were identified as running back Omarion Dixon, 20, and linebacker John Moore, 19. Both are redshirt freshmen.

VanHooser played at Lakota East High School in Liberty Township, Ohio.

Eubanks played at Warren Township High School in Waukegan, Ill.
