NCAAF News: Washington legacy QB Sam Huard enters transfer portal

Quarterback Sam Huard, a former five-star recruit, is leaving the Huskies.

The university legacy player said he entered the transfer portal on Tuesday and is searching for an opportunity to play. He was No. 3 on the depth chart in 2022 and with the return of starting quarterback Michael Penix, Huard’s chances would be limited with the Huskies.

He said it was difficult to give up his dream of following his father, Damon Huard, and uncle, Brock Huard, as Washington’s starting quarterback.

“What do I want more? Do I want to go play right now, or do I want to continue to stick it out, because this has been my dream?” Huard, a redshirt sophomore, said. “Do I really want to leave here like this, having really not played much? It was not how I expected to come in (to UW), but sometimes that’s life.

“Part of me just really wanted to stick it out and continue to grow and develop and then hopefully get my opportunity down the road. But I wanted a fresh start and a chance to compete to go play. That’s what ultimately led me to making this decision.”

Sam Huard, a left-hander, set the Washington record for passing yards (13,214) and passing touchdowns (153) at Kennedy Catholic in suburban Seattle in his final high school game. He was ranked by the 247Sports composite as a five-star recruit, the No. 3 quarterback and the No. 12 overall prospect in the 2021 class.

He appeared in five games, completing 24 of 44 pass attempts for 265 yards with one touchdown and four interceptions. He played in just one game in 2022, connecting on 2 of 2 passes for 24 yards in a 52-6 win against Portland State.

Washington is left with two scholarship quarterbacks — Penix and Dylan Morris, who was the Huskies’ No. 2 quarterback in 2022.
