NFL News: Commanders starting safety Kamren Curl out Sunday (thumb)

Washington Commanders starting safety Kamren Curl will be sidelined for Sunday’s season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars because of a thumb injury that has prevented him from practicing this week.

Curl was declared out by the Commanders for Week 1 on Friday’s injury report, ending any hope the team would have their second-leading tackler from last season on the field against the Jaguars. His replacement is expected to be second-year Darrick Forrest, a fifth-round pick in 2021 out of Cincinnati.

The origination of Curl’s injury is unknown, but he confirmed to reporters on Monday that he underwent thumb surgery after being seen with cast-like protection and a sling last week at practice.

Curl, 23, enters his third season coming off a solid season that included him registering 99 tackles, one sack and five passes defensed. In his two NFL seasons, the former seventh-round pick in 2020 out of Arkansas has posted 187 tackles, three interceptions and three sacks in 32 games (25 starts).

Commanders tight end Logan Thomas, who has spent all offseason recovering from tearing his ACL and MCL last season in a game against the Las Vegas Raiders, was listed as questionable by the team. Fellow tight end Cole Turner is also questionable with a hamstring injury.
