NFL News: Rams QB Matthew Stafford (thumb) inactive vs. Packers

Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford is inactive and won’t start on Sunday against the Packers in Green Bay.

Brett Rypien will start for the Rams (3-5) against the Packers (2-5). Dresser Winn was elevated from the practice squad and will serve as the backup.

Stafford had been listed as questionable but did not practice all week after sustaining the injury last Sunday vs. Dallas and leaving the game. Rams coach Sean McVay said earlier this week that it would likely be a gametime decision.

“You give him up until right before the game,” McVay said.

Stafford was diagnosed with a UCL sprain in his throwing thumb after making contact with a helmet while throwing in last Sunday’s 43-20 loss to the Cowboys.

Stafford, 35, has thrown for 2,070 yards with eight touchdowns and seven interceptions in eight games this season.

Rypien replaced Stafford against the Cowboys last week, going 5-for-10 for 42 yards.

Also inactive for the Rams are offensive linemen Rob Havenstein and Zach Thomas, running back Myles Gaskin, linebacker Ernest Jones and defensive end Earnest Brown

For the Packers, linebackers Quay Walker and Brenton Cox Jr., safety Rudy Ford, tackle Caleb Jones and wide receiver Samori Toure are on the inactive list.
