NFL News: Report: Giants QB Daniel Jones wants $45M per season

New York quarterback Daniel Jones is switching representation ahead of negotiations with the Giants and is looking for a contract worth upward of $45 million per season, Pro Football Talk reported Monday.

Jones is switching from CAA to Athletes First in search of a lucrative long-term deal, seen as a power move by the quarterback, who didn’t have his fifth-year option picked up by the Giants last year.

Athletes First has engineered the largest QB deals in NFL history (at the time they happened) five times, including for Aaron Rodgers and Dak Prescott, according to the New York Post.

Further, the Post reported that talks between the Giants and Jones got off to a “bumpier start” than expected. The Giants were expecting a long-term deal with Jones at around $35 million per season, per ESPN.

It all but ensures Jones is heading for the franchise tag in 2023 if the sides can’t reach agreement on a deal by March 7, the deadline to use the tag. The non-exclusive QB tag this year is $32.4 million. Jones could sign with another team on that tag but at a cost of two first-round picks.

Jones, 25, had a breakout season in 2022, playing a career-high 16 games. He didn’t miss any games because of injury for the first time in his four seasons. He sat out Week 18 to rest for the postseason.

Jones completed 67.2 percent of his passes for 3,205 yards and 15 touchdowns against five interceptions in 2022. He also rushed for 708 yards and seven touchdowns. He’s thrown for 11,603 yards and 60 TDs against 34 INTs for his career. He’s 21-31-1 as the Giants’ starter since being selected No. 6 overall in the 2019 draft.
