NFL News: Titans put two on IR, fear Taylor Lewan is done for season

The Tennessee Titans placed safety Chris Jackson and kick returner Trenton Cannon on injured reserve Wednesday amid fears there may soon be another more prominent name added to the list.

In corresponding moves, the Titans signed two defensive backs, veteran Terrance Mitchell off New England’s practice squad and Andrew Adams off Pittsburgh’s practice squad.

Veteran Pro Bowl offensive lineman Taylor Lewan suffered an injury on the team’s first offensive play from scrimmage in Monday night’s loss to the Buffalo Bills and was carted off the field. Reports indicate the team is bracing for Lewan being done for the season with a knee injury.

Titans head coach Mike Vrabel would only say Tuesday that Lewan is being evaluated further. The first injury report of the week is due later Wednesday. Lewan also missed the final 11 games of the 2020 season with a torn ACL.

Lewan, 31, has started 100 of 105 career games, all with the Titans. He is a three-time Pro Bowl selection.

Cannon, 28, is done for the season after reportedly blowing out his knee on the opening kickoff against the Bills. He had two kickoff returns in Week 1 for 33 yards. Cannon was signed in the offseason, didn’t make the initial 53-man roster but was added to the practice squad and elevated.

It’s unclear what Jackson’s injury is or the extent of it. He played in 35 percent of the Titans’ snaps on defense in the loss to the Bills. Jackson, 24, is in his third season with the Titans, with five passes defensed in 24 games (six starts).

Mitchell, 30, has recorded 269 tackles, eight interceptions and nine forced fumbles in 83 games (51 starts) for five teams. He played in 14 games (13 starts) with the Houston Texans in 2021.

Adams, 29, has seven career interceptions and 23 passes defensed in 87 games (35 starts) with the New York Giants (2016-17) and Tampa Bay (2018-21).
