NFL News: Vikings LB Jordan Hicks still hospitalized after surgical complications

Minnesota Vikings linebacker Jordan Hicks remains in the hospital on Monday after developing compartment syndrome in his right leg and undergoing a surgical procedure Sunday in Minneapolis.

Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell said Monday that Hicks remained in the hospital “just out of precaution at this point.”

Hicks was injured in the Vikings’ win on Sunday and rushed to the hospital at the recommendation of Minnesota’s medical staff. Team media relations for the Vikings announced Hicks, 31, was out of the game in the third quarter with a shin contusion.

But he had originally hobbled off in the first quarter after making a tackle that involved a direct collision with teammate Cam Bynum. Hicks came back into the game and played 23 more defensive snaps according to the NFL’s official gamebook.

“I give our medical staff (credit) for getting him quickly to the hospital,” O’Connell said Monday. “He’s doing well and on the road to being fully back in our facility.”

Compartment syndrome is swelling that causes pressure at the area of an injury that can have long-term effects to muscles and bones if not treated immediately.

O’Connell said Hicks is out for Week 11 at Denver but his status beyond that — Week 12 is a Monday visit to the Chicago Bears — will not be determined until more information on his recovery is available.

The Vikings are off for their bye in Week 13 before playing the Raiders in Las Vegas on Dec. 10.
