Sean Monahan’s goal with 3:13 remaining was the go-ahead tally in what became a five-goal third-period outburst for the Winnipeg Jets as they rallied to beat the Carolina Hurricanes 5-3 on Saturday afternoon in Raleigh, N.C.

Nino Niederreiter had two goals, including an empty-netter, and Kyle Connor and Mark Scheifele scored in the first six minutes of the third period, which began with Carolina up 3-0. Josh Morrissey provided three assists. Connor Hellebuyck made 32 saves.

Martin Necas, Teuvo Teravainen and Sebastian Aho had Carolina’s goals, and Andrei Svechnikov supplied two assists. Pyotr Kochetkov stopped 27 shots.

The Hurricanes, who had won two games in a row, were without a point for just the second time in nine games.

Monahan’s 20th goal of the season went into a basically empty net as Kochetkov had gotten out of position.

The comeback helped the Jets avoid dropping two games in a row for just the second time since the end of November.

Connor, who also scored in the Jets’ 2-1 home victory against Carolina in early December, posted his 25th goal of the season 1:36 into the third period. Niederreiter, a former Hurricane, registered his 15th goal at 3:02 of the third and Scheifele followed with his 18th on a power play at 5:40.

The second period worked out incredibly well for the Hurricanes, who scored three times and killed three penalties.

Necas’ 19th goal came 10:12 into the second period.

Teravainen notched his 19th goal, with Aho with the pass to set up the tally. He has scored in back-to-back games for just the third time since October.

Aho’s 24th goal came on a power play with 48 seconds remaining in the second period. Aho, who has scored in five of the last seven games, was on the receiving end of Svechnikov’s dandy pass. Svechnikov notched his sixth two-assist game of the season.

Despite the time on special teams weighted in favor of the Jets, Carolina held a 13-9 edge in second-period shots.

The Hurricanes also killed a penalty late in the first period, so the penalty-killers were called up for four kills in a 20-mimute stretch of game time.

Carolina defenseman Jalen Chatfield was back in action for just his second game after missing time with an injury, and he recorded an assist on the game’s first goal.
