Kevin Shattenkirk tallied the game-winning goal in the fifth round of a shootout as the Boston Bruins edged the host Washington Capitals 3-2 on Saturday night.

Boston (43-17-15, 101 points) killed off Hampus Lindholm’s four-minute double-minor for a high stick to the face of Washington’s T.J. Oshie in overtime before breaking a skid of three losses in four games.

Lindholm and John Beecher also scored while Jeremy Swayman made 18 saves for the Bruins.

Washington (36-27-10, 82 points) tied the score on two occasions on goals by Michael Sgarbossa and John Carlson, the latter who was playing in his 1,000th career NHL game.

Charlie Lindgren made 27 saves for the Capitals, who have lost back-to-back games (0-1-1) after a three-game win streak.

After Boston’s gutsy kill extended the game beyond overtime, Boston’s Jake DeBrusk and David Pastrnak and Washington’s Dylan Strome and Sonny Milano scored shootout goals.

Shattenkirk ripped the eventual winning goal past Lindgren’s glove, and Swayman made the final stop on Connor McMichael.

Lindholm got the scoring started with 1:13 remaining in the first period. Pavel Zacha sent a cross-ice pass up to the point, where the defenseman broke his 51-game scoring drought by sailing a shot past Lindgren from just inside the blue line.

The teams traded goals in a span of 1:02 early in the second, beginning with Sgarbossa tying the score at the 1:20 mark. Nick Jensen’s pass sent Sgarbossa in alone for a snap shot that beat Swayman.

Beecher quickly put the visitors back in front when he forced a turnover and finished a backhand shot on the breakaway for an unassisted goal at 2:22.

Just past the halfway mark of the game, at 14:03, the Capitals took advantage of two power plays that fell less than a minute apart and tied the score at 2-2. Carlson slammed home Max Pacioretty’s cross-crease pass to the left post.
