NHL News: Leafs get late tiebreaker to edge Senators, 3-2

Justin Holl scored the go-ahead goal at 18:05 of the third period as the Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the visiting Ottawa Senators 3-2 on Saturday night.

David Kampf and William Nylander also scored for the Maple Leafs, who have won two straight after losing their season opener.

Shane Pinto and Claude Giroux scored for the Senators, who have lost their first two games.

Toronto goaltender Ilya Samsonov made 26 saves. Ottawa goaltender Anton Forsberg stopped 29 shots.

Pinto scored a power-play goal on a shot from the right circle at 9:09 of the first period on a set up by Giroux. Jake Sanderson also earned an assist. Mitchell Marner was off for holding.

Toronto had a 13-11 advantage in shots on goal after the first period.

The Maple Leafs failed to get a shot on goal on their first power play of the game in the second period.

Brady Tkachuk hit the goal post with his shot at 16:32 of the second on Ottawa’s second power play of the game.

Nylander hit a post at 18:43 of the second with the sides even.

Kampf tied the game at 19:43 of the second period, tipping in Jake Muzzin’s pass. Calle Jarnkrok also earned an assist.

The Maple Leafs had a 24-18 edge in shots on goal after the second period.

Samsonov stopped an attempt by Josh Norris, who broke in alone early in the third period. Not long after, Marner hit a post on a shot from the slot.

Nylander scored his second goal of the season at 13:24 of the third period on Toronto’s second power play of the game. Auston Matthews set up Nylander, and John Tavares also earned an assist.

Giroux tied the game from the edge of the crease at 14:49, his first goal as a Senator. Alex DeBrincat and Thomas Chabot earned the assists.

Holl knocked in the winner with assists by Michael Bunting and Marner.

Toronto goaltender Matt Murray (groin) could be out for about four weeks. Erik Kallgren was promoted from the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League to replace him.
