NHL News: Leafs star Auston Matthews eyes Wednesday return

Toronto Maple Leafs center Auston Matthews practiced in a regular blue sweater on Tuesday and hopes to return Wednesday night against the Chicago Blackhawks.

He has been out since Jan. 25 with a sprained knee.

Matthews, 25, skated on a line with Michael Bunting and William Nylander on Tuesday morning. He was given a three-week recovery timeline, and Wednesday’s game would mark exactly three weeks since the injury.

Matthews, who has 25 goals and 28 assists in 47 games this season, told reporters last week that his recovery was going well after skating with his teammates for the first time in a red no-contact sweater.

Toronto also recalled goaltender Joseph Woll and forward Pontus Holmberg from the AHL’s Toronto Marlies on Tuesday.
