The NHLPA said in a statement Thursday that it is “getting closer to completion” of its search for a new executive director.

The man considered to be the leading candidate is Marty Walsh, the U.S. Secretary of Labor and the former mayor of Boston, TSN reported Thursday.

Walsh, 55, has been President Joe Biden’s Labor Secretary since March 2021 following more than seven years in office in hockey-loving Boston.

The NHLPA executive board must vote to select a new director. No vote was held Thursday.

The union is working to replace Donald Fehr, 74, who has served in the role since 2010 after holding the analogous position in the MLB Players Association from 1983 to 2009.

Active players who are members of the NHLPA’s search committee include Ian Cole (Tampa Bay), Mattias Ekholm (Nashville), Justin Faulk (St. Louis), Sam Gagner (Winnipeg), Zach Hyman (Edmonton), Kyle Okposo (Buffalo), Nate Schmidt (Winnipeg), Kevin Shattenkirk (Anaheim), Jacob Trouba (New York Rangers) and James van Riemsdyk (Philadelphia).
