Oklahoma State rallies past in-state rival Oklahoma

Bryce Thompson scored 15 of his 19 points in the second half to rally Oklahoma State to a 72-56 victory over visiting Oklahoma in Big 12 play on Wednesday in Stillwater, Okla.

Thompson shot 7 of 12 from the field, including 3 of 3 from 3-point range, to go along with nine rebounds and four assists, while Kalib Boone added 15 points and seven rebounds. Avery Anderson III finished with 14 points and five assists, with Woody Newton chipping in 12 points and five rebounds.

The Cowboys (10-8, 2-4 Big 12) ended a three-game losing streak by outscoring the Sooners 48-26 in the second half. Oklahoma State shot 27 of 63 (42.9 percent) from the field, including 7 of 17 (41.2 percent) from 3-point range.

The Sooners (11-7, 2-4), who have dropped two of their past three games, were led by Grant Sherfield, who scored all 15 of his points in the first half. Jacob Groves had 10 points, while his brother Tanner grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds to go along with four points.

Oklahoma shot 23 of 56 (41.1 percent) from the field, including 4 of 15 (26.7 percent) from beyond the arc.

Oklahoma State opened the second half on a 12-3 run to take a 36-33 lead it wouldn’t relinquish following Anderson’s three-point play with 18:10 remaining.

The Cowboys stretched their advantage to 53-43 following Thompson’s 3-pointer with 11:35 to go.

Oklahoma State outscored the Sooners 13-2 in the final 5:35 to turn the game into a rout.

After Caleb Asberry’s 3-pointer gave the Cowboys an 18-15 lead with 8:24 left in the first half, the Sooners took control by going on a 9-0 run to take a 24-18 lead following Sherfield’s layup with 5:05 remaining.

Sherfield, with his 15 points in the first 20 minutes, equaled all of his teammates’ first-half scoring output by himself, to lead Oklahoma to a 30-24 halftime lead.

Oklahoma shot 12 of 29 (41.4 percent) from the field before the break, including 2 of 6 (33.3 percent) from beyond the arc.

Oklahoma State was led by Boone’s six points, with no other Cowboy scoring more than four before halftime.

The Cowboys shot 10 of 32 (31.3 percent) from the field in the first half, including a dreadful 1 of 7 (14.3 percent) from distance.
