PGA News: ‘Drained’ Scottie Scheffler fired up to ‘play well’ at RBC

Scottie Scheffler said Wednesday he’s a “bit drained” after winning his second Masters Tournament but added he didn’t give a second thought to playing this week at Hilton Head, S.C.

Scheffler said there’s time to get some rest and focus on winning another golf tournament, adding he’s not in town “just to walk around and play a little golf.”

Scheffler made the comments at Harbour Town Golf Links ahead of this week’s RBC Heritage, having won three of the past four tournaments he’s played. In the fourth, the Houston Open, he tied for second.

“So going into this week, it’ll be a bit more challenging than it was last week just because I think playing in contention at majors and especially winning takes a lot out of you,” Scheffler, 27, told reporters. “There’s a lot of stuff that goes on after the Masters on Sunday, and you get home very late, and emotionally I think I’m a bit drained.”

But he never considered withdrawing from the RBC.

“I committed to this tournament, and I’m not showing up here just to walk around and play a little golf,” Scheffler said. “I left my pregnant wife at home to come here and play in a golf tournament. I am here to play and hopefully play well. I’m not here just for fun.”

Scheffler is No. 1 in the world, No. 1 in the FedExCup standings and has pocketed more than $15 million in earnings in nine events. Regardless, he said he was really driven Sunday morning heading into the final round at Augusta.

“I think whenever you’re able to do it again, I think it’s really special. I don’t know if validation is the right word for the first one, but doing something like that twice is very special, and so there’s definitely a good bit of satisfaction in accomplishing that,” Scheffler said.

“Part of how I felt Sunday morning was I wished that I didn’t want to win as badly as I did. I wanted to win that tournament really badly for a number of reasons,” Scheffler said. “I wanted to put the green jacket back on. I wanted to be able to have that plane ride home with the jacket, us all having fun.

“It’s kind of weird living through those times in your life where you’re dreamt about having moments like that and then all of a sudden they’re happening.”
