Three-year-old colt Rio Moon suffered a leg injury after a race Sunday at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky., and was euthanized, the eighth fatality at the track in recent weeks.

Rio Moon suffered a broken leg at the finish line after the sixth race of the day at the home of the Kentucky Derby, a Churchill Downs spokesperson said.

The colt was trained by Dale Romans and ridden by Martin Garcia.

Two horses were injured and subsequently euthanized in May 6 undercard races to the Kentucky Derby. Five others were euthanized in the days preceding the Derby, in one case leading to the suspension of Saffie Joseph Jr., who trained two horses who collapsed on the track and died.
