San Francisco Center in Union Square, downtown San Francisco, is losing its fifth store in the month. Retail stores have been leaving the mall for various reasons, such as lower footfalls, crime, theft, and an increase in homelessness. The mall is reportedly 75 percent empty and has lost roughly a billion in value.

Madewell is the latest store to leave the San Francisco Center. The store, which sells clothing and accessories, said it was closing its store downtown on Monday. This follows the closure of its sister brand, J. Crew. Other brands such as Adidas, Lucky Brand, and Aldo have already closed or are reportedly planning to close soon.

Malls nationwide are closing due to slower footfalls post-pandemic and the surge in online sales during the pandemic. However, downtown San Francisco is also facing other problems, such as an increase in the homeless population as well as in crime and theft.

Nordstrom had been the mall’s largest tenant and reportedly occupied 312,000 square feet on multiple floors. Its exit in August 2023 was a big blow to the upscale mall. Following this, many smaller retailers also left the mall.

San Francisco Center still has a large Bloomingdale store. This is among the bigger retail stores operating in the downtown mall.

Reports say that almost 100 retailers have shuttered since the beginning of the pandemic. Many other retailers in downtown San Francisco say they are closing their stores in this location, citing several reasons, including low footfalls, the surge in crime, and homelessness. There were 203 retailers in Union Square in 2019, and now there are reportedly 107 stores operating there.
