Simone Biles adds to record-setting medal haul at worlds

Simone Biles won two more gold medals at the gymnastics world championships on Sunday in Antwerp, Belgium, ending the meet with five medals and as the most decorated gymnast in history.

Biles turned in winning efforts in the beam and floor competition, giving her four gold medals — she also won the all-around and team gold medals — to go with a silver in the vault. This weekend, she achieved her 37th medal in world and Olympics competition, surpassing Russian legend Vitaly Scherbo’s mark of 33.

After a disappointing appearance at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, Biles stepped away from gymnastics to focus on her well-being and didn’t return to competition until this summer at the U.S. Classic and then the national championships in August in San Jose. At the nationals, she won the all-around, beam and floor events as well as a bronze medal on the bars.

At age 26 and newly married, Biles has shown she remains a force in the sport ahead of the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Biles wrapped up the competition on Sunday with an impressive showing on the floor exercise. And despite stepping out of bounds at one point, the overall difficulty of her routine gave her enough room in the scoring to win gold.

The Texan won her first world medal 10 years ago in the same venue in Antwerp at age 16.
