Starbucks opened an inclusive store for customers and employees with disabilities. The new cafe has an accessible design, ambient lights and sound, and lower counters to help customers and employees. The giant coffee and beverage chain said that all its company-owned stores would follow this design in the future.
The Starbucks cafe with the new design was opened on Friday in Union Market, Washington, DC. It has power operated doors to help customers enter the restaurant with minimal effort. Baristas has a new point-of-sale (POS) system to help customers place orders.
The POS has an adjustable angle stand, and the screen can be magnified. It also has a voice assist feature and photos of items on the menu to make it easier for employees and customers with disabilities. Lower counters have been built to improve access for wheelchair users.
Many other features are designed to make the preparation, ordering, and in-service experience seamless. The store’s floor plan is free from obstacles and has open sightlines.
The store lighting has been optimized to reduce glare, shadows, and backlighting, which can make it difficult to see. There is sufficient insulation to decrease the noise level in the store.
The store has also added digital status boards for customers to know when to pick up their drinks. Baristas will also continue to call out customers’ names when their orders are ready.
Starbucks has also made changes behind the counter for employees. It has introduced a new Clover Vertica system for brewing drip coffee. The design is more accessible and includes a large dial and protruding buttons.
Starbucks plans to open at least 600 stores following a similar design for company-owned stores. It is planning to increase its footprint in the U.S. by four percent.
Sara Trilling, President of Starbucks North America, believes that building accessible stores will help them in “terms of customer connection” and “employee engagement.”
