Verizon joins forces with Netflix in an attempt to become a streaming middleman.

Yesterday, the company released a beta version of its streaming hub called “+play” that allows customers to manage all of their streaming service subscriptions in one place. In the latest evolution of the streaming wars, Verizon hopes to compete with current hubs such as Amazon’s Prime Video Channels and Roku.

How it works: Verizon customers can use the +play site to subscribe to services like NFL+, HBO Max, Peloton, Duolingo, and others, and have them rolled into their existing phone or internet bill. To entice customers, anyone who signs up for a service through the hub right now will receive a free year of Netflix’s $19.99/month Premium tier.

+play launched with streaming services such as NFL+, NBA League Pass, HBO Max, AMC+, and Peloton, among others.

“We’re thrilled to officially launch +play in open beta, providing our customers with exclusive access to offers and tools to manage their growing number of subscription services,” said Erin McPherson, Verizon’s chief content officer, in a statement. “As America’s network and one of the largest direct-to-consumer distributors in the United States, Verizon is the partner of choice for content and subscription services, and we’re positioned to move the industry forward by providing customers with more choice and enabling a seamless billing and management experience.” Fans are watching.

In the United States, the overall digital media industry is expected to grow to 157.7 billion US dollars by 2027. With Verizon’s latest offerings, middleman platforms and streaming services are all vying for a larger slice of the big pie.
