Walmart launches pilot workwear style pants project with Unspun

Walmart, the largest retailer in America, is always looking to expand its businesses into valuable products for its customers and web fans. The giant retail company has set national targets, including increasing the number of products made in the USA and reducing the environmental impact of the merchandise it sells nationwide and worldwide. The announcement of a pilot project with American tech company Unspun on Thursday will fulfill both objectives.

Walmart and Unspun are exploring ways to use Unspun’s 3D weaving technology, Vega, to make workwear-style pants with a Walmart house brand. This new partnership is expected to reduce garment-making’s impact on the environment.

Traditionally, yarn is woven into one-dimensional fabric. This fabric is then cut and sewn to make garments. Making garments this way leads to some fabric waste and a significant amount of time. Multiple steps are required to manufacture a single garment.

Unspun’s 3D weaving technology, Vega, offers a new approach to traditional garment manufacturing. In this method, yarn is spun directly, resulting in a completed garment, which decreases the manufacturing process’s environmental impact.

Unspun has secured multi-million dollar contracts from American companies to help it scale its 3D weaving operations and establish a micro-factory in Oakland, California. The new partnership with Walmart will help the company expand its operations.

Unspun’s partnership with the nation’s largest retailer is helping it to reach its objective of having 350 Vega machines in North America by 2030. This will give the weaving tech company the capacity to produce 10 million units annually.

Walmart aims to have a zero carbon footprint by 2035. It focuses on its 10-year, $350 billion commitment to goods made, grown, or assembled in the U.S. This pilot project with Unspun is another step forward in the giant retailer’s efforts to meet these goals.
