Celebrity tennis star Novak Djokovic finally broke his silence and defended his father Srdjan. After his semi-final win over Tommy Paul at the Australian Open, the Serb said his family was against war and they did not support violence. Earlier, a video of Srdjan posing with some of the Serb’s fans holding Russian flags at the Grand Slam had created a huge controversy. Earlier, Srdjan had expressed similar sentiments of their family being against violence.
Novak Djokovic addressed the issue of his father’s video in detail after he won the semi-final match over Tommy Paul. He said that his father and his whole family were against war and that the entire family had been through several wars in the nineties. He mentioned his father’s statement that mentioned that they were “against war” and that they would “never support any violence or any war.”
In a statement Novak Djokovic said that the first thing he wanted to say was that his family knew how devastating it was “for the family, for the people in any country that is going through the war.” He said that the second thing he wanted to say was that his father had met with his fans and that he heard what his father said in the video and it was “Cheers.”
Djokovic said that he believed that it was interpreted by some of the media in a “really wrong way” and added, “I’m sorry that that has escalated so much.”
Srdjan didn’t watch his son Djokovic’s semi-final win at the Rod Laver Arena, in Australia. He stayed at home and watched his son’s tennis victory. Novak Djokovic will face Stefanos Tsitsipas, in the final on Sunday. It’s an opportunity for the tennis star to win his tenth crown. He said that he hoped to have his father with him as he attempted to become the first man to win 10 Australian Open titles.
