In November 2023, celebrity host Gayle King and former NBA legend Charles Barkley hosted a new show called King Charles on CNN. However, the show started with low viewership compared to expectations, and the ratings are still lower this week.
King Charles has had a seven-week run, and the maximum number of viewers has been just above 500,000 in its debut show (501,000) on November 29 and January 17 (517,000 total viewers).
Nielsen reported that the Wednesday (January 31) episode had only 402,000 viewers. It also said that only 89,000 viewers belong to the 25-54 demographic that advertisers target.
Nielsen also said it was the first time on Wednesday that the show hosted by two legends, Barkley and King, saw a viewership below 100,000 in the all-important 25-54 demographic. There was a 20 percent drop in total viewership compared with its November debut and a 36 percent decline in the 25-54 demographic.

Many repeat shows on the same day, such as Seinfeld, Modern Family, Everybody Loves Raymond, and South Park, have seen several runs with better ratings than CNN’s King Charles on Wednesday.
According to RadarOnline sources, CNN has lost hope that the show will have a long run beyond 2024, as per the initial contracts signed.
Although Gayle King and Charles Barkley are legends in their own right, they have different styles. The CBS Mornings anchor, NBA Hall of Famer, and analyst want their styles, creating conflict.
Charles Barkley said he looked forward to working with Gayle King before the premiere. When the show did poorly compared to expectations, Charles Barkley dismissed the initial Nielsen ratings. It’s been only two months since its launch, but it already looks like “King Charles” might not see a renewal of contracts, and Gayle King and Charles Barkley will go their ways later, if not sooner.
