Women’s Top 25 roundup: No. 14 NC State demolishes Elon

There was no hangover for No. 14 North Carolina State after beating UConn a few days ago. Behind 20 points from Aziaha James, the Wolfpack topped visiting Elon 90-35 on Wednesday in Raleigh, N.C.

James was one of three players to score in double figures for NC State (3-0), and she also notched five rebounds and three assists. Mimi Collins added 18 points on a perfect 8-of-8 shooting, while Madison Hayes chipped in 15 points. Saniya Rivers contributed seven assists to go along with six points.

Elon (1-2) did not have a player score in double digits. Maraja Pass finished with six points and four assists.

The Wolfpack led start to finish and were up by 16 points after the first quarter. NC State pulled away more in the second quarter, outscoring the Phoenix 16-2. The Wolfpack shot 51.6 percent from the field overall and held Elon to 23.8 percent shooting.

No. 16 Notre Dame 102, Northwestern 52

Sonia Citron scored 23 points and Hannah Hidalgo had 21 as the Irish topped the Wildcats in South Bend, Ind.

Hidalgo — the reigning ACC Rookie of the Week — stuffed the stat sheet with six rebounds, five assists and six steals while also shooting 9-for-12 from the floor for Notre Dame (2-1). Maddy Westbeld added 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Irish, while Kylee Watson and Anna DeWolfe scored 10 points apiece. Melannie Daley and Hailey Weaver each tallied 11 points for Northwestern (2-1).

The Wildcats started with an 8-0 run before Notre Dame coach Niele Ivey called for a timeout. The Irish then outscored Northwestern 24-8 through the rest of the first quarter. Notre Dame kept pulling away in the second, outscoring the Wildcats 32-10 to take a commanding 30-point lead into halftime.

Notre Dame won the rebounding battle by 20 and forced Northwestern into 25 turnovers.

No. 17 North Carolina 63, Hampton 32

Led by Deja Kelly’s 12 points and 11 from Paulina Paris, the Tar Heels dominated Lady Pirates in Chapel Hill, N.C.

North Carolina (3-0) built a 20-point lead in the second quarter with suffocating defense and forced 29 turnovers, eight from Pirates guard Camryn Hill, the team’s top scorer (20 ppg) this season.

The Tar Heels led 32-13 at halftime.

Hampton (0-2) missed its first eight 3-point attempts and finished 2 of 10 from deep. Aisha Dabo led the Lady Pirates with seven points, while Hill scored five on 1-of-9 shooting.

No. 23 Ole Miss 80, Temple 63

After slipping 11 spots in the latest AP Top 25 Poll, the Rebels responded with a win over the visiting Owls behind 16 points, eight assists and seven rebounds from KK Deans in Oxford, Miss.

Kharyssa Richardson also had 16 points for Ole Miss (2-1), while Marquesha Davis added 13. Rita Igbokwe and Snudda Collins each tallied 10 points for the Rebels. Temple (2-2) was powered by Tiarra East’s 24 points.

Ole Miss opened the game with an 11-2 run, with Richardson notching four points and an assist in that stretch. Temple never cut the deficit to single digits after the first quarter, with Ole Miss going on to lead by as much as 24 points. The Rebels shot 51.8 percent from the field, and Deans made half of her team’s six 3-pointers.

No. 25 Oklahoma 92, Alabama State 46

Skyler Vann joined the Sooners’ 1,000-point club and No. 25 Oklahoma ripped through Alabama State in a 92-46 decision in Norman, Okla.

Vann had a team-high 16 points and nine rebounds along with three of the team’s 20 steals.

Oklahoma (4-0) took a 41-20 lead on Vann’s free throw with 4:22 left in the first half that got her in the Sooners’ milestone club.

Sahara Williams had 14 points and seven rebounds for Oklahoma.

The Lady Hornets (0-4) were paced by Shmya Ward’s 17 points and four rebounds.

Alabama State failed to generate a rally with perimeter shots not falling. The teams combined to make 8 of 38 3-pointers. The Lady Hornets missed 13 of 16 attempts.
