Maddy Westbeld scored 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as No. 18 Notre Dame beat No. 20 Tennessee 74-69 on Wednesday evening in Knoxville, Tenn., in the inaugural ACC/SEC Challenge.
Tennessee (4-3) led by as much as 16 points and was on top in the game for more than 36 minutes.
Westbeld was one of five players to score in double figures for Notre Dame (6-1). Natalija Marshall had 15 points and nine rebounds, Hannah Hidalgo tallied 13 points, seven rebounds and seven assists, KK Bransford added 12 points and Anna DeWolfe chipped in 11 points.
The Lady Volunteers were powered by 14 points and seven rebounds from Jasmine Powell, while Destinee Wells had 13 points and five assists.
Tennessee led by five points heading into the final frame, but a 14-7 run gave the Irish their first lead of the second half. Marshall scored six points in that stretch for Notre Dame.
The Lady Volunteers tied the game up with under two minutes to play, but jumpers from Hidalgo and Bransford allowed the Irish to take back the advantage. Two free throws from Westbeld with 10 seconds remaining pushed the Irish’s lead to two possessions.
While Notre Dame played without preseason All-ACC selections Olivia Miles (knee) and Sonia Citron (leg), Tennessee was missing preseason All-SEC forward Rickea Jackson (leg) for the fifth straight game.
No. 5 North Carolina State 70, Vanderbilt 62
Saniya Rivers scored 22 points as the Wolfpack beat the Commodores in a sold-out Reynolds Coliseum in Raleigh, N.C., in the ACC/SEC Challenge.
Rivers shot 8-for-14 from the floor, and River Baldwin added her first double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds as NC State (8-0) remained unbeaten. Jordyn Cambridge paced the Commodores (7-1) with 15 points and five steals, and Sacha Washington added 14 points, seven rebounds and five blocks.
NC State led by as much as 26 points after Zoe Brooks and Aziaha James hit back-to-back 3-pointers and Brooks sank two free throws to open the fourth quarter. Vanderbilt clawed back and trimmed the deficit to eight points with a minute to play but never got any closer.
No. 10 Texas 112, Oral Roberts 74
Taylor Jones had 27 points and 16 rebounds — both career highs — as the Longhorns beat the Golden Eagles in Austin, Texas.
Jones was nearly perfect for Texas (8-0), shooting 11-for-11 from the floor and 5-for-7 from the free-throw line. Also for the Longhorns, Madison Booker scored 17 points and Shaylee Gonzales had 16 points and four assists.
Taleyah Jones led Oral Roberts (4-3) with 23 points while Ruthie Udoumoh had 13 points and eight rebounds.
Texas never trailed and led by as much as 45 points. The Longhorns made only 3 of 8 3-point attempts but shot 61.5 percent overall from the floor.
No. 22 Louisville 64, No. 19 Ole Miss 58
Kiki Jefferson scored 16 points as the Cardinals won on the road in Oxford, Miss., over Ole Miss.
Nina Rickards added 15 points, four rebounds and three assists for Louisville (7-1). Snudda Collins led Ole Miss (6-2) with 22 points while Marquesha Davis had 12 points.
Ole Miss led by two points at halftime before Louisville outscored the Rebels 22-14 in the third quarter. Ole Miss made just 1 of 11 shots from 3-point land, while Louisville was 3-for-6. The Cardinals also hit 25 of 36 shots from the free-throw line while the Rebels were 13-for-28.
Miami 74, No. 21 Mississippi State
Lazaria Spearman had a double-double of 11 points and 15 rebounds as the Hurricanes beat the Bulldogs on in Starkville, Miss., in the ACC/SEC Challenge.
Miami (6-0) also got 15 points and nine rebounds from Jasmyne Roberts, 16 points from Lemyah Hylton, and 10 points and six assists from Shayeann Day-Wilson while handing Mississippi State (8-1) its first loss.
The Bulldogs led by as much as nine points but were outscored by Miami in each of the final two quarters. The Hurricanes dominated on the glass, winning the rebounding battle 49-23.
No. 23 Marquette 88, Memphis 59
Liza Karlen had 21 points, nine rebounds and four assists as the Golden Eagles routed the Tigers in Milwaukee.
Marquette (7-0) also got 17 points each from Mackenzie Hare and Rose Nkumu, plus 14 points and six assists from Jordan King. Kai Carter powered Memphis (2-5) with 18 points, and Madison Griggs put up 16 points.
The Tigers led by a point after the first quarter, but the Golden Eagles outscored them 23-6 in the second frame. Marquette led by as much 32 points and shot 62.5 percent (10 of 16) from 3-point range.
No. 25 Princeton 75, Seton Hall 71 (2 OT)
Kaitlyn Chen had 21 points as the Tigers topped the visiting Pirates in double overtime.
Chen made 12 of 15 free throws and also had five rebounds as Princeton (5-2) registered its second win over a major conference opponent. Skye Belker added 18 points for the Tigers, while Parker Hill had four blocks and four steals off the bench.
Micah Gray led Seton Hall (4-3) with 24 points, while Azana Baines added 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Princeton led by five points with 17 seconds left in regulation, but a layup by Baines and a 3-pointer at the buzzer by Gray sent the game into extra frames. Two free throws by Madison St. Rose gave Princeton a two-possession lead in the second overtime.
