WTA News: WTA roundup: Emma Raducanu advances to semis in Seoul

No. 6 seed Emma Raducanu upset No. 3 seed Magda Linette of Poland 6-2, 6-2 at the Hana Bank Korea Open on Friday, qualifying for her first semifinal since winning the 2021 U.S. Open.

Raducanu, from Great Britain, has yet to lose a set this week in Seoul. In Saturday’s semifinal, she will face No. 1 seed Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia, a 6-2, 6-1 winner over 17-year-old lucky loser Victoria Jimenez Kasintseva of Andorra.

In Friday’s other quarterfinals, No. 7 seed Tatjana Maria of Germany ousted No. 4 Zhu Lin of China 6-1, 6-1. No. 2 seed Ekaterina Alexandrova of Russia was pushed to the limits by Lulu Sun of Switzerland before winning 7-5, 7-6 (6).

Toray Pan Pacific Open

Russian Liudmila Samsonova upset No. 3 seed Garbine Muguruza of Spain 6-4, 6-2 in the quarterfinals in Tokyo.

Tied 4-4 in the first set, Samsonova won four straight games to finish off the first set and take a 2-0 lead in the second. Samsonova had 23 winners to 11 for Muguruza and broke her serve five times.

In the semifinals, Samsonova will meet Zhang Shuai of China, who defeated Petra Martic of Croatia 7-5, 6-2.

Also victorious was No. 4 seed Veronika Kudermetova of Russia, who fought back to defeat No. 5 Beatriz Haddad Maia of Brazil 6-7 (4), 7-6 (6), 6-1. Her semifinal opponent will be Zheng Qinwen of China.
