WTA Tamara Korpatsch upset over Harmony Tan’s doubles withdrawal

Tamara Korpatsch is livid that doubles partner Harmony Tan withdrew from their scheduled Wimbledon match just one hour before the start on Wednesday.

Tan famously eliminated Serena Williams on Tuesday in an epic three-hour, 11-minute match in her Wimbledon debut. She apparently sustained a thigh injury during the match.

Korpatsch, 27, was slated to play in her first career Grand Slam doubles match. She and Tan were scheduled to face 15th-seeded Raluca Olaru of France and Nadiia Kichenok of Ukraine.

Tan’s decision erased all harmony between the pair.

“She just texted me this morning. Let me wait here 1 hour before the match start,” Korpatsch wrote on Instagram. “I’m very sad, disappointed and also very angry that I can’t play my 1st Doubles Grand Slam. And It’s really not fair for me. I didn’t deserve that.

“She asked me before the tournament if we wanna play doubles and I said yes, I didn’t ask her, she asked me! If you’re broken after a 3 (hour) Match the day before, you can’t play professional. That’s my opinion.”

Tan, 24, hasn’t commented on the withdrawal or on Korpatsch’s comments.

Tan, a Frenchwoman ranked 115th in the world in singles, outlasted Williams 7-5, 1-6, 7-6 (7). It was Williams’ first match in 364 days.

Greece’s Valentini Grammatikopoulou and Thailand’s Peangtam Pilpuech replaced Korpatsch and Tan in the field. Olaru and Kichenok recorded a 6-2, 6-3 victory.

Korpatsch, from Germany, lost a three-set singles match to Great Britain’s Heather Watson on Monday.
