8 Ways How to Stay Healthy This Holiday Season

There’s no excuse to get off your healthy eating plan for the holidays. You can still make great choices and stay healthy at this time of the year. And there’s nothing wrong with splurging on occasion. But because Christmas and New Year’s fall pretty much for seven days and lots of holiday parties abound, you should watch your alcohol level intake and sweet sugary food cravings.

Preparing and eating food along with eating lots of   sweets, interacting with large crowds, and spending time with friends and loved ones are just a few of the activities that make the holidays so special. You can stay safe and healthy this holiday season when you bring awareness to your diet and health practices.

1-Most likely you’re going to be at some large gatherings. What happens at large gatherings is that people display food in bowls and there are lots of things to choose from like chips, candy, and cold cuts. Make sure that your host has tongs for every single bowl where people are grabbing food. The worst thing that can happen during a Christmas or holiday dinner is to have multiple people especially ones that you don’t know picking on food with their hands. That’s not sanitary. If the host does not have tongs for taking food from bowls there is nothing wrong in being very polite and asking for some. If people haven’t washed their hands previously they are breeding grounds for bacteria especially COVID and viruses like the flu. So be extra vigilant and watch what people are doing around the table.

2-The holiday season can sometimes be stressful. Don’t let stress get in the way of your eating habits. When stress occurs people tend to go to comfort foods and overeat. As long as you are aware of this it’ll help you cut down on calories fat and sugar and you’ll feel a lot better at the end of the day after your meal.

3-Of course it’s important to drink a lot of water especially if you’re drinking quite a bit of alcohol. Make sure that you are hydrating in between your drinks.

4-When visiting another home that you are not familiar with and someone else’s cooking you really don’t know the ingredients that they put in those casseroles and side dishes. They can be laden with butter, fat and salt. While they may taste good, they’ll only make you feel tired and bloated later. Of course it’s OK to eat some of it but watch your portions. Load up more on the proteins such as turkey, meat, or fish and any other type of protein that is being served. If you are eating ham   make sure to drink a lot of water because ham is laden with tons of salt.

5-Before eating your Christmas dinner make sure that you have eaten lunch a couple of hours before. This will help you avoid overeating.

6-Buffet style Christmas dinners are hazardous to your calorie intake because the option to keep going back to the table to stock up on more food is very enticing. It’s a good idea to fill your plate to the max on what you think you will be eating and you should be full enough where you don’t always have to go back for seconds. For some reason buffet style tables tend to make people think it’s an all you can eat bonanza,   And unfortunately they can be especially if you are at a hotel or resort celebrating your holiday because the food just keeps coming and it doesn’t stop.

7-If you are the host and preparing food for your family and friends don’t make the holiday tradition just about the food. It’s a good idea to have some fun Christmas games so people can get up walk around and do things other than sitting at the table eating and drinking.

8-One of the best advice you can do is after you eat immediately go for a nice long  digestion walk outside to get some fresh air.
