On Monday, Amazon said that it will be spending $972 million to expand its fleet of electric vehicles in Europe. This investment will increase the size of its fleet in the continent to 10,000 in the next three years. The e-commerce giant current operates 3000 thousand vehicles in Europe. The latest investment in Europe is part of the e-commerce giant’s 2040 net-zero carbon emissions goal.

Amazon is also expecting to deliver a larger number of packages through its “micro-mobility hubs.” These centrally located delivery stations are located in dense cities such as London, Munich and Paris. Packages are delivered from hubs in 20 cities in Europe, using cargo scooters or by foot.

Amazon has invested in electric startup Rivian and its early investment should be beneficial to the e-tailer as the electric truck maker announced in September that it had signed a “memorandum of understanding” (MoU) with giant automaker Mercedes. According to the MoU, the companies would work together and manufacture electric vans in Europe.

The online retail giant has placed orders for 100,000 vehicles from Rivian Automotive. These vehicles are expected to be delivered through 2025. Amazon has set its net zero carbon emission goal for 2040. This is a decade ahead of the 2050 target that has been set by the Paris Agreement.

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy has spoken about the challenges in the business and said that a major goal –to “decarbonize” required substantial and sustained investments.

Jassy also said that he hoped that Amazon’s deployment of thousands of electric vans, long-haul trucks as well as bikes for short distances would help them to “shift further away from fossil fuels” and would encourage others to continue to scale and innovate in Europe as well as around the world. The e-tailer will also invest in charging facilities across Europe.
