A man who had barricaded himself inside a hotel in Michigan was apprehended Thursday night, according to authorities. The suspect is accused of killing a hotel clerk in a fight with an employee over money. The shooting incident took place late afternoon on Thursday, and at 8:48 p.m. Michigan State Police announced that the gunman had been arrested and taken into custody.

Issa Shahin, the chief of the Dearborn Police Department, told reporters on Thursday night that the man had a rifle and had repeatedly threatened police throughout the seven-hour standoff. After being shot, a 55-year-old Riverview resident was brought to the hospital, where he passed away. According to Shahin, the individual was a clerk who “was just trying to perform his job.” The suspect’s identity was kept a secret. He was a 38-year-old guy with a history of mental illness and drug misuse, according to Shahin. He surrendered after seven hours of negotiation.

A dispute about a bill led to the start of the disturbance on Thursday afternoon, at a Hampton Inn on Michigan Avenue, close to downtown Dearborn. Shahin revealed that the suspect became angry and demanded a refund.

At 1:09 pm, police started receiving calls began to come in reporting gunfire at the hotel. According to Shahin, cops quickly escorted people from the premises and barricaded the area. Crisis mediators spent the following few hours trying to get in touch with the shooter and put an end to the issue amicably, according to Shahin. In response, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives’ Detroit division advised residents to keep distance from the area.

The shooter seemed to be on the third floor of the structure, according to reports. According to Michigan State Police, the shooter was “equipped with a long rifle.” The Dearborn city government advised locals to stay away from the stretch of Michigan Avenue between Military and Monroe streets. Duvall Elementary School, situated in the vicinity was placed on a soft lockdown.
