Celebrity Charlize Theron had a tough childhood and recently opened up about a terrifying night in her life in a cover story interview for a popular magazine. The Hollywood celebrity graced this month’s cover due to her philanthropic efforts and more.
South African-born Charlize Theron is on the cover of Town & Country’s November 2023 10th annual philanthropy issue. When asked if the moment that her mother shot her drunken husband as her father had earlier shot at her and her mother was the moment when she had been inspired to champion the cause of fighting for women who faced violence, celebrity Charlize Theron replied, “I would say this: it’s a simple correlation to make.”
She added, “But I think it’s way more complicated than having just one night of trauma in your life.”
Charlize Theron was only 15 years old when her father returned drunk one night with a gun and began shooting at her and her mother in her bedroom. When they tried to prevent him from entering by leaning against the door, he “shot through the door three times.”
Theron’s mother, Gerda Maritz, shot and killed her husband so she could save herself and her daughter in 1991. She was not charged, as she shot her husband in self-defense.
The 48-year-old Oscar and multiple award winner for the 2004 film Monster described her father as an alcoholic and said that it was unpredictable living with one. She also said that the shooting had changed her life forever and that she has been working to bring awareness about gender-based violence.

Charlize Theron also spoke about the devastating impact that apartheid and AIDS had on South Africa and how that had also impacted her life.
Charlize Theron’s foundation is called the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project. Founded in 2007, the organization focuses on initiatives that address “health, education, vaccine equity, and gender-based violence.”
