Celebrity San Diego Padres and Los Angeles Dodgers legendary player Steve Garvey announced his bid for the senate seat in California that has fallen vacant after the recent death of Senator Dianne Feinstein, in September. Earlier this year Feinstein had announced that she would not run for reelection. The 2024 senate hopefuls list is increasing after MVP baseball player became the latest to announce a bid for the seat as a Republican, on Tuesday morning.
Celebrity Steve Garvey has had 14 successful seasons with the Dodgers and five with the Padres. He is used to being in the limelight and believes that he can tackle many issues. He had considered a political career in 1987 after he retired but had been dogged by several personal issues including multiple affairs, a public divorce and estrangement with some of his children.
These issues seem to have faded in the background as he is now remembered as a legendary baseball player from California. Steve Garvey was a 10-time All Star and the National League selected him as the Most Valuable Player (MVP) in 1974.
In an interview before the announcement the 74-year-old player said that he had always been interested in politics and more. He spoke of what he described as “the dysfunction of Washington” and claimed that he would represent California with a “fresh voice” and “fresh ideas.”
The legendary baseball player’s website speaks of his ideas and his vision for California and more but doesn’t emphasize that he is running as a Republican. Other Republicans who are running for the senate seat in addition to Garvey include attorney Eric Early and few others.
California is predominantly a blue state and there are strong Democratic contenders for the senate seat. They include Reps Adam Schiffer, Katie Porter and Barbara Lee.
California Governor Gavin Newsom appointed Laphonza Butler as the senator after Senator Dianne Feinstein’s recent death. Senator Butler has not commented on whether she will also run for the seat in 2024.
